Pigmentation: What Causes It?

Life cycle and hormonal changes can affect the distribution of color (melanin) in our skin, leading to the appearance of all kinds of pigmented lesions. These include moles, freckles, age spots, or melasma which is a dark, patchy facial discoloration condition. Generally speaking these spots mean that you suffer from *various degrees of damaged skin. Whether it is caused by sun exposure, genetics or other factors, the result is uneven, blemished skin tone. Pigmented skin lesions differ from vascular lesions, which are not caused by sun damage and appear differently under dermatoscopy.

The skin discolouration tends to increase with age, it is governed by a number of factors including:

  • Genetics
  • Skin type
  • Sun exposure
  • Injury to the skin (including burns and post-treatment inflammation)
  • Hormone imbalances
  • Pregnancy
  • Some illnesses and medications
  • Acne

What is Laser Pigmentation Removal?

The Q-Switched Nd:YAG pigment laser was created to remove birthmarks, some types of brown growths, and tattoo pigment ink in the colours black, red, and other colours from the skin. A new class of pigment lasers called Q switch lasers may treat tattoos that are green, sky blue, or black as well as superficial pigmentation like freckles and lentigines as well as deeper pigmentation like Hori's and Ota Nevus. Depending on the indication, repeated laser treatments may be necessary. Until the pigment is eliminated or further improvement is deemed doubtful, the tattoo or pigmentation will be treated at intervals of two months or longer.

Q-Switched laser could be used to treat the condition:

  • Removal of tattoos
  • Age stains
  • Freckles
  • Skin resurfacing
  • Taking care of onychomycosis (toenail fungus)

LASER PIGMENTATION REMOVAL PRE & POST CARE

Postoperative Cautions

  • Avoid sun exposure, tanning, or sunburn for at least 4 weeks prior to treatment.
  • Discontinue the use of active skincare products such as retinoids, exfoliating acids, bleaching products, and chemical peels for at least 2 weeks before treatment.
  • Inform your practitioner if you have a history of pigment rebound, hyperpigmentation, or sensitive skin.
  • Do not undergo treatment if there is active infection, inflammation, or open wounds on the treatment area.
  • Please advise your practitioner if you are taking medications that may affect skin healing or photosensitivity.

Postoperative Care

  • Do not wash your face with tap water within 24 hours after treatment. Sterile saline may be used to gently cleanse the skin with a cotton pad.
  • Avoid touching the treated area with your hands immediately after treatment to prevent bacterial infection.
  • Do not scratch or pick the treated area. Allow any scabs to fall off naturally.
  • Avoid skincare products containing active ingredients during the recovery period. Use professional laser recovery products to support skin barrier repair and prevent pigment backflow.
  • Avoid hot, spicy foods, dark-coloured foods, seafood (such as beef, mutton, soy sauce), alcohol, and smoking for 14 days after treatment.
  • Avoid exposure to ultraviolet rays and strong light during recovery. Use physical sun protection, including umbrellas, face masks, and hats when outdoors.
  • It is recommended to apply repairing essence every 2–4 hours for the first week after treatment.
  • A repairing mask may be applied one week post-treatment, together with recovery cream, to promote healing.
  • Chemical-free sunscreen may be applied from the next day. If sunscreen is required on the same day as treatment, only medical-grade physical sunscreen should be used and removed at night with sterile saline.

Common Adverse Reactions

  • Tingling or warm sensation during or after treatment
  • Mild pinpoint bleeding on the treated area
  • Temporary changes in skin tone or uneven coloration
  • Temporary darkening of pigmentation, especially in deeper pigment cases
  • Possible acne flare in individuals with mite-prone or acne-prone skin
  • Temporary pigment backflow during the treatment process

These reactions are generally expected and resolve gradually as the skin heals.
